Zelensky must compensate Germany for destruction of Nord Stream

(MENAFN) Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stated that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should compensate Germany for the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline, which she claimed was carried out by Kiev with assistance from foreign intelligence agencies.

According to reports, the German government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz has attributed the 2022 explosions in the Baltic Sea, which damaged the pipelines delivering Russian gas to Germany, to a small group of Ukrainian operatives. The alleged leader, identified in the media as former military officer Sergey Kuznetsov, was reportedly handed over to Berlin by Italy last year.

Speaking at a campaign event in Heilbronn on Thursday, Weidel criticized German authorities for continuing to supply military aid to Ukraine despite the pipeline being “simply blown up right under our noses… by a Ukrainian with the help of foreign intelligence services – one could only guess, who it might have been.” She added, “I can tell you what we will do when we are in government. We will demand compensation. The Ukrainians, Zelensky should pay for blowing up our pipeline,” earning applause from attendees.

Weidel also stressed that Germany has provided over €70 billion (approximately $83 billion) to Ukraine and insisted that the funds should be returned along with compensation for repairs to Nord Stream, whose majority shareholder is Russian gas company Gazprom. “A country that does that is not our friend. One should really stand up and, at least, admit it,” she said.

Despite efforts by mainstream German parties to limit the influence of the far-right, AfD’s popularity continues to rise. A recent INSA study showed the party leading in polls with 26% support, slightly ahead of Merz’s CDU/CSU.
